Student Spotlight: Joshua Kughn - Fueled by Passion for Diesel Mechanics

High Plains Technology Center Diesel Technology student Joshua Kughn is turning his lifelong interest in engines into a promising career. A full-time student, Joshua also works at AutoZone and spends his free time helping his uncle build drag race cars, further strengthening his hands-on experience and love for automotive work.

Joshua’s instructor describes him as a student with “a very deep interest in diesel mechanics and automobiles.” They added, “He’s hardworking, dependable, and eager to learn—always diving deeper into how things work. His passion for diesel mechanics is clear in everything he does.”

When asked what he enjoys most about the Diesel Technology program, Joshua said,

“Being able to be in an environment I’m comfortable in and being able to teach others how to do certain things in the shop.”

He credits his instructors and classmates for shaping his learning experience, saying,

“My instructors have the knowledge to guide me on how to do the job right, and my classmates have introduced me to new, innovative ways of getting jobs done.”

Joshua encourages others who are interested in a CareerTech program to take the leap.

“If you’re considering joining the Diesel program, I highly recommend applying. Not only will you learn the basics of diesel, you’ll also learn about gas vehicles and heavy machinery.”

After completing his training, Joshua plans to build his career close to home as a diesel mechanic in the Woodward area, continuing to serve his community through the skills he’s developing at HPTC.
