HPTC Wind Energy Tech Program Prepares Oklahoma Students for Future in Energy.

NextEra Energy Resources has hired 51 tech center graduates over the past four years.

Students graduating from High Plains Technology Center’s Advanced Wind Energy Technician program are entering one of Oklahoma’s fastest-growing industries equipped with the hands-on skills needed for immediate success in the workforce.

High Plains Technology Center is proud to work with NextEra Energy Resources, LLC, one of America’s largest energy infrastructure developers, to help prepare students for long-term careers in the energy sector. Since 2023, NextEra Energy Resources has hired 51 graduates from the Woodward-based program, including six members of this year’s graduating class.

The technician program provides intensive hands-on instruction in energy safety, electrical fundamentals, mechanical systems, hydraulics, preventive maintenance and industry-recognized certifications. Students also complete emergency evacuation drills, safety training and real-world technical applications designed to mirror the demands of the field.

“Our goal is that when students leave our program, they are workforce-ready on day one,” said Taylor Burnett, executive director of Secondary and Strategic Development at High Plains Technology Center. “Collaborating with NextEra Energy Resources has helped us create a program that includes the precise training students need to earn careers that support their families while strengthening an industry that plays a major role in our local economy and schools. This is a true partnership, and it’s working for northwestern Oklahoma.”

As demand for American energy continues to grow, so does the need for highly trained technicians. Oklahoma remains a leader in wind energy production with more than 12,700 megawatts of installed wind capacity as of April 2025, according to the Oklahoma Renewable Energy Council — enough energy to power approximately 3 million homes.

High Plains Technology Center continues to align its training programs with the skills needed in today’s energy workforce. As a result, Oklahoma technical school graduates are employed at 18 of NextEra Energy Resources’ 24 operational energy centers across the state.

“Programs like this are creating real opportunities for students right here in Oklahoma,” said Parker Greene, general manager, NextEra Energy Resources. “We’re excited to continue welcoming High Plains Technology Center graduates into our workforce and supporting the future of reliable, homegrown energy.”

Through strong industry partnerships and workforce-focused training, High Plains Technology Center is helping meet Oklahoma’s growing energy workforce demands while preparing students for stable, high-paying careers close to home.
