Student Success Spotlight: Benny Mata

Benny Mata, a senior in the Beaver County Welding and Construction program in Turpin, is the kind of student every instructor hopes to have in their shop. According to his instructor, Brett Gardiner, Benny’s strong work ethic and steady drive set him apart. He is often the first to arrive and the last to leave, always looking for another opportunity to improve his skills. Whether it is helping a classmate with a project or lending a hand, Benny is known for stepping up and supporting others.

For Benny, welding is more than a class—it is a craft he takes pride in.

“I enjoy taking pride in my craftsmanship and seeing the finished result when I’m done,” Benny shared. “That’s what drives me to do more things and build more.”

Since beginning the program, Benny has grown not only in confidence but also in technical ability. What once felt unfamiliar has become a strength.

“When I started, I couldn’t work with different materials or really weld very well,” he said. “Now I can weld and work with a variety of materials and get good at it.”

Beyond technical skills, Benny says the program has helped prepare him for life outside the classroom. The expectations of showing up, being accountable, and doing precise work mirror what employers expect in the workforce.

“It’s taught me to be on time and that everything I do affects everything else,” Benny explained. “My grades affect this class, and this class prepares me to be precise with measurements, cutting, welding, and construction.”

Looking ahead, Benny plans to purchase his own welding truck, build a successful career, and one day raise a family. He credits the hands-on learning and mentorship at HPTC for helping him move confidently toward those goals.

He also has encouragement for students who are considering welding.

“I’d tell younger students to try it because it’s a useful skill,” he said. “You can use it around the house, and there are always job opportunities. Even if you decide it’s not for you, it’s something you’ll always know how to do.”

With his dedication, humility, and passion for craftsmanship, Benny Mata represents exactly what career and technical education is all about—students learning real skills, building strong work habits, and preparing for a future filled with opportunity.
